 Infinity Pools

A rare sight indeed, the famous Infinity Pools of Haven are a series of circular streams connected at their centers, pooling into lovely figure-eight patterns spread out over a low grassland. Trout and other fish spawn here in springtime, making it an appropriate fishing ground for wolves and other meat-eating predators of the area. Because of this, bears frequent this place so it is best to be cautious so as not to sneak up on one. These pools are one of the primary watering sources within all of Haven, as they are present year-round.

Months had passed since her terrified dash through the night and slowly the wounds had healed. The gash on her shoulder had thinned to a puckered rosy pink scar surrounded by a furless patch. She had bathed once in the cool waters that gurgled through the woods she resided in. The mud had set into her fur, leaving faint brown shadows in her silvery grey fur.

Her strength had increased, not by much but she was healing. Just a week passed she had found an abandoned hunt. A good third of a deer carcass that had slightly staled but was still good to eat. She'd eaten until the flesh nearly overflowed from her belly and them slept in a hastily dug den not far from her meal.

Ildaytia woke, the tip of her snout barely passing the edge of the den, with a dry tongue and lips. She ambled towards the gurgling stream, finally at peace. No one had come to find her, none of the natives seemed to notice her. It was like she had entered a bubble where all things were safe. She drank calmly from the cool water, ankle deep in the stream to cool off.

This place was too good to be true. Why had she never come here before? This was essentially a gigantic playground and a feast all wrapped into one.

Bogbean bounded about, sticking her nose into puddles, muck and streams. She wasn't so much wagging her tail as her whole body was vibrating- yes, yes, everything was so interesting, and there was so much of it!

She startled a good number of marsh birds and unidentified swimming creatures was she went crashing through the pools, but once her excitement simmered down she collected herself enough to make her limbs behave and catch a nice, fat frog. Now calmed down somewhat, she ambled aimlessly through the pools, crunching contentedly on her snack. She stepped from wet ground into a stream, claws tapping against the smooth stones of the streambed. The sudden chill made her flinch, but she fully waded in, watching the streambed as she sloshed her way upstream, still chewing on her prize.

She heard Ildaytia before she saw her. The sound of flowing water coming from all sides almost drowned out the sound of the other wolf drinking. Bogbean glanced up from her idle examination of the interesting stones at her paws and saw an extraordinarily rough looking wolf. The only wolves even approaching her condition that Bogbean knew of were old, battle-scarred retirees that she sometimes helped feed because most of their teeth had fallen out. The wolf before her looked young, almost her own age, and like she'd never had anyone teach her to groom herself. Bogbean stared for a moment, processing, tail automatically waving a greeting while she thought.

She hastily gnawed down the last bit of meat on her frog and dropped the bones and gristle into the stream at her paws. "Hi, I'm Bogbean of the Southern Nation. Are you okay?" She spoke casually, trying not to make a big deal out of it. Maybe someone roughed her up. It won't help if I just make her feel more alienated. It's not as she knew what she was supposed to do when she found a beat-up stranger all by herself, but it could never hurt to offer help or kindness.

Hiram had never traveled this far before. He was a long way from home; or rather, the place he used to call home. It was going to take some time to adjust his old pattern of thinking. That place wasn't his home anymore. Home was where you felt happy and safe. Home was a place with an endless supply of love and support from family and friends.

Maybe Hiram had never been home in his entire life. But that was why he'd left. That was his purpose, as he traveled to new lands. He was searching for a place that would finally feel like home. Maybe this would be it. He'd come across this new land several ago, and had seen a variety of new flora and fauna, but had yet to come across any of his own kind. But that was alright, he supposed. It was quiet here, and he liked quiet.

The massive creature slowly made his way toward one of the many pools in the area, lowering his head to quench his thirst with the cold, refreshing water. It was beautiful here, truly. He wondered what other wonders this land had to offer, but honestly, Hiram wouldn't mind lingering here for a while. There was an abundance of water and prey, and adequate shelter nearby. This was paradise. So why did he seem to be the only one here? With that thought in the forefront of his mind, he breathed a sigh and lowered his head for one more drink.

And, moments later, he quickly lifted his head again. He heard noises. And not just the subtle rustlings of a prey animal. No, this was the sound of excitement, crashing and splashing as someone went prancing through the water and the muck. He looked in the direction of the sound, and sure enough, there was another wolf. Female. Actually, there were two! Okay, so maybe Hiram wasn't so observant after all. He trotted closer, ears pricked to see if he could catch any of their conversation. Surely they wouldn't mind the company of one more?

Vibrant green eyes were closed in bliss as the cool water washed down her throat. It was easy to forget the smaller of the discomforts when one was as roughed up as Ildaytia was. It felt soothing and settled the dull ache that was left over from her moment of overindulgence. The scent of a nearby wolf washed over her in the breeze but the scent was light. It did not bother the girl, and she did not open her eyes.

At least not until she hesrd the paws in the water not far from where she stood. Her head snapped up, her tail held straight and stiff in line with her spine. She stared wide eyed at the female before her. She was different to any wolf Ildaytia had seen in her life. She was short and russet colored, normal enough. But what caught the attention of the grey wolf was the shells that appeared around the neck of the stranger, woven into the thick fur of her neck. Blinking slowly Ildaytia raised her gaze to hazel-green eyes and lifted a small smile onto her face.
"Greetings Bogbean. My name is Ildaytia." Here she paused for a moment, thought crinkling her brow before she replied. "I suppose I am." Her tone was thoughtful and mildly suspicious. She had yet to see her own reflection properly and had little idea of just how horrific her injuries were.

"I am much better than I have been at the very least." She smiled crookedly and licked her nose quickly. Before she could say much more the scent of a second wolf wafted over her and she stiffened. It was a male and from what Ildaytia could see he was quite large and snowy white. The grey girl shrunk into herself and hid behind the kindly female, her entire figure shaking in fear, bright green eyes wide and ears flattened. Perhaps this was not the quiet tranquil place she had initially believed it to be.

Some of Bogbean's worries fluttered away as the stranger returned her greeting. Ildaytia? I've never heard tell of her. Something fluttered in her belly- relief? She did not like to think that any wolf she knew would let another living creature suffer wounds such as Ildaytia's, and leave them without care. Her story was not Bogbean's business, but she must be made of some truly tough stuff.

Bogbean opened her mouth to reply, but stopped as Ildaytia was seemingly startled by something. She flinched just slightly as the other wolf moved to hide behind her, but remained in place. She simply had not been expecting to be approached so closely. She followed Ildaytia's gaze. Oh. Someone else had happened upon the two of them. Why was Ildaytia so afraid? This stranger was certainly large, but Bogbean couldn't pick out any malice in his face.

Maybe it was naive of her to think she would be able to detect ill intent at a glance- Ildaytia was clearly the more experienced of the two of them. Bogbean squared up, raising her head high and doing her best to look stern and confident. "D-do you know him?" Despite herself, she stammered. She was a fishing wolf, not a bodyguard. She tried to keep her voice low, at a volume only Ildaytia would hear.

Hiram felt excitement stirring up butterflies in his belly. These were the first wolves he had seen since arriving in this new land. He was optimistic. Maybe they would become his first friends in this place! But all of those giddy, hopeful thoughts were silenced by the reactions of the females he was approaching. The taller of the two, who looked a little worse for wear, suddenly cowered behind the shorter female. Hiram hesitated, his trot slowing to a very slow walk, and his ears splayed outward in an embarrassed, dejected sort of way.

He supposed he should say something, to let them know he meant no harm to either of them. He cleared his throat softly "Sorry to, um, startle you..." the snowy male began. "I have no ill intentions, I just wanted to say hello. My name is Hiram."

He added the brief introduction of his name almost as an afterthought. Maybe it would help garner a bit of trust. However, if his words weren't enough, he would be on his way. He never meant to upset anyone. He'd only hoped to make a new friend.

Bogbean flinched as Ildaytia took shelter behind her, peering with wide green eyes at the first male she had encountered since leaving that evil place. After everything she had been through she did not trust males in any way, even if they had a face that said everything but harm. Ildaytia swallowed dry and shook her head minutely. "Males are bad..." she whispered back, her voice low and shaky. Her hackles bristled and she shuffled her paws nervously as Bogbean squared up against the snowy male, his approach slowed and the grin fell from his face.

The change of emotion had Ildaytia's heart pounding. The last face she saw fall was her son's as she fled for her life, leaving the boy behind. He was stolen, changed. He was not her gentle pup anymore. He had been brainwashed by the wolves that had held her, that had caused her pregnancy. Torn between her fear and her will to to be strong Ildaytia hesitantly stepped out from behind Bogbean, her tail still perpendicular to her spine, her ears flat against her head. She spoke as if took every effort just to form the words.

"Hiram, my apologies... You... You startled me." Every cell in her body seemed to be fighting amongst themselves. Half of her wanted to run, to hid somewhere in the shade of the trees. The other half wished desperstely to be normal. Two wolves in one day was a lot for the damaged woman to handle.
"I am... Well, my name is Ildaytia." She muttered to the running water, her eyes never once meeting the lavender ones of Hiram. She had learned that eye contact meant pain, meant fear. She would not push her luck too far just yet. Speak when you are spoken to, do not make eye contact. She would be cautious, she still did noy know for sure if he was safe as he promised he was. She would wait and see.

She was totally lost. Bogbean stayed stock still as Ildaytia slunk out from behind her, still cringing away from the wolf in front of them. The wolf- Hiram- seemed quite sheepish, not like someone who had something bad planned for either of them. She allowed herself another glance at Ildaytia. She was speaking, but kept her eyes turned downward, posture guarded, as if she was expecting at blow at any moment. Hiram kept his distance, looking crestfallen.

"Hey there, I'm Bogbean." She dropped her aggressive posture, opting to stand loosely close to Ildaytia. She wasn't sure if Ildaytia needed her help, but didn't want to bother her with nosy questions. Still, the frightened way Ildaytia held herself made Bogbean's stomach twist uncomfortably. How could she help her feel more comfortable?

"Um- are either of you hungry?" Food was what she landed on. She knew how to get food. "I'm very good at catching anything that moves in water- I'm from the Southern Nation. We've got a lot of water there."

The taller woman, the one who had cowered at his approach, spoke. She apologized for having been startled and gave her name, which might have suggested she had relaxed a bit. But her body language was just as tense and guarded as before. Still, Hiram tried his best to be friendly, and make her feel at ease. He knew what fear looked like, and worse, he knew what it felt like. He didn't want to be the cause of any such feeling. "Pleased to meet you," he began, lowering his head and shifting his gaze to the other woman. Fortunately, she seemed much more relaxed, which helped to loosen a bit of the tension Hiram was feeling as well.

"Bogbean," he repeated, nodding his head again. "Pleased to meet you as well." And that was the extent of it, really. Hiram was a man of few words, and certainly wasn't the best at starting a conversation. So it came as a relief when Bogbean broke the silence and asked about food. Sure, he could eat. He certainly wouldn't turn down the offer.

But then the snowy male felt his interest piqued as she mentioned some Southern Nation of which she was a member. "Southern Nation?" he said, curiosity coloring his baritone voice. "How many Nations are there in this land?"

It was a conscious effort on Ildaytia's part to relax. Bogbean had dropped her stance, and Hiram had certainly not come across as dangerous. Even though it went against everything she had learned growing up, she lowered her hindquarters and sat. Bogbean threw out the mention of food and Ildaytia's stomach rumbled loudly. She was surviving on scraps, not having the energy to hunt for herself yet. It was enough to keep her alive, but it didn't leave her feeling full and satisfied. Besides, she had never tasted the silvery creatures that swam in the waters. She wasn't quick enough to catch them herself and the pack who had owned her considered fish to be a delicacy, something a lowly slave was not worth.

The white male had other thoughts on what Bogbean had said about where she grew up. A pang of guilt struck Ildaytia. She hadn't even considered that! Everyone came from somewhere, and this place sounded wondrous. Cool water a plenty, and fish abundant. Plus the gentle Bogbean lived there. Ildaytia was lost in a dreamland for a few seconds thinking of a land surrounded by cool waters, breeze playing with her fur and kind faces surrounding her while she slept peacefully. How many nations? Ildaytia had scented one in her travels, and Bogbean was from a second. Was there more? She leaned forward, grey ears perked in interest even if her tail was still stiff behind her. Habits died hard, even for the strongest of character.

Despite her clear nervous babbling, her two companions didn't seem put off. She felt Ildaytia shuffle closer, but she still seemed stiff.

What came as a surprise was that Hiram was both a foreigner and seemed to be working with very little knowledge of Haven in the first place. All the outside wolves Bogbean had met before had specifically traveled to her neck of the coast for one reason or another. "You're not from around here? That's so fun!" She chirped, tail bobbing enthusiastically. Her enthusiasm was genuine, but she was partially hoping that seeing her act confident and friendly would help Ildaytia unwind a little more. Being that nervous looked painful.

"There's three in total, there's the Northern Nation, Western Nation and Southern Nation." She rattled off what she thought would be most useful, putting on as much of an informative tone as she could muster. "The Southern Nation is a really cool place to live- we have a bunch of rivers and streams that feed into the ocean. We have the most water out of the three nations, and if you're near the coast, you can find all kinds of stuff at low tide."
